*** SCHMIDT WINS FIRST TITLE ***
Bobby Schmidt III survived four rounds of match play in our St. Patrick's Day Special to claim his first ABT Masters title. Bobby qualified 11th for the top 16 finals and advanced to the championship match by defeating Bill Wrenn 242-219, Roger Partynski 283-238, and Russ Huffman 249-231. His opponent for the title was G.W. Gregg who qualified 14th, then defeated Brian Cywinski 258-186, Jason Wojnar 253-200, and James Reed 219-158. Schmidt took the early lead in the championship match but left a "big 4" in the 7th frame, then missed a 10-pin in the 8th, allowing Gregg to close to within 7 pins. Gregg then left a 6-8 split in the 9th and Schmidt closed him out with spare, strike, spare in the 9th and 10th, winning by the final count of 201-191.
Champion's Profile: Bobby Schmidt III is a 21-year-old student at Rock Valley College. He is single and has been bowling for the past 5 years. He currently bowls league at Don Carter Lanes in Rockford and has a high game of 300 and an 801 high series. Bobby was using a TKO Punch drilled by Greg Evans at Metro Ltd. Pro Shop. Bobby credits Mike Truitt, Chris Croak, and Jamie Durham as having helped him work on his game. Bobby thanked the ABT staff, Rynish Bowling Center, and all the spectators who stayed to watch the finals. His plans for his winnings include more bowling, school, and a little for his best friend, Jamie Durham, who was on hand lending his support all weekend. Bobby thanked the ABT for running a fair tournament and dedicated his win to his family, especially his grandmother, who is ill.
CONGRATULATIONS BOBBY!
Tournament Notes: Congratulations to Davey Rosen who won $500 by breaking a strike pot in game 4. Congratulations also go out to Ken Nelson on his fifth place finish in the ABT Nationals in Las Vegas.
BTD Match: In the Beat the Director Doubles Match, Ed Mousseau and Rich Newland defeated Brian Cywinski and Harry Grauer 401-324. Brian and Harry each received $25 consolation prizes. The carryover for the next BTD now stands at $970.
