*** NEVELS WINS PRESIDENTS DAY EVENT ***
David Nevels won his first ABT Classic title in our Presidents Day Singles
event at AMF Rolling Meadows. David qualified 2nd for the top 12 finals, earning him a bye
in round one of the match play. He then defeated Bruce Bodenstein 180-173 and Karen Martin
240-237 to advance to the final round. His opponent in the championship match was Kelly
Vasquez, who qualified first for the top 12, earning him a bye in the first two rounds of
match play. In round three, Kelly defeated Vincent Santucci 233-203 to earn his berth in
the title match. The title match was much closer than the final score would indicate, as
the lead changed hands three times in the first seven frames, and at the end of eight it
was Nevels leading by eight pins. Disaster then struck for Vasquez as he left splits in
the ninth and tenth frames, allowing Nevels to pull away to the final 200-170 victory.
Champion's Profile: David Nevels is 28 years old and employed as a
dispatcher. He is married to Tomeka and they have a 2-year-old daughter named Candace.
David has been bowling for 12 years and does his league bowling at Austin Bowl. He has a
high game of 265 to go along with a 705 high series as his personal bests. David was
rolling a Columbia Synergy drilled by Jose Torres at Action Pro Shop. He said that Walker
Booker has helped him to work on his game. David thanked to ABT staff and all his friends
who supported him during the finals. His winnings will go into the bank. David closed his
interview by thanking God for letting him win one.
CONGRATULATIONS DAVID!
Tournament Notes: Bobby Whitaker won a 3-ball bag from Storm
Bowling Products by posting the high series on weekend number one of this 2-week event.
Mary Williams won this week's Storm Ball raffle.
BTD: In the Beat the Director Match, Susan Sawyer defeated ABT
Director Ed Mousseau 200-136 to win $506. Bob Udseth won the $25 Spectator Bonus Award.
The carryover for the next BTD now stands at $532. Next BTD at Rynish Bowling Center.
