masters at rolling meadows***
Jeff Wertepny won his first ABT
Masters title in our Thanksgiving Tournament at AMF Rolling Meadows. Jeff
qualified 2nd for the top 12 finals, earning a bye in round one of the match
play. He then defeated Paul Sanders 238-207, and Tony Kaskadden 264-199 to
advance to the title match. His opponent was Tom Carter, who qualified first,
earning a bye in the first two rounds of match play. Tom defeated Michael
Stewart 249-244 in round three to earn his berth in the title match. Wertepny
had an 8-pin handicap advantage to start the match, but Carter wiped that out
with a double in frames three and four. Another double in frames six and seven
gave Carter the lead by eight, but he left the 6-8 rail in frame eight, giving
Wertepny the room he needed as he doubled to retake the lead. He hung on from
there to win by the final score of 197-195.
Champion's Profile: Jeff
Wertepny is 46 years old and employed as a Mason. He is married to Sharon and
they have three children: Jeff, Jeremy, and Joey, ages 15, 11, and 6. Jeff has
been bowling for 30 years and currently bowls league at Woodfield Lanes. His
high game is 300 and he has a high series of 780. Jeff was using a Storm Red Hot
Flame drilled by Carl Edelman at Elk Grove Bowl. Jeff thanked his son, Jeremy,
and Doug Seligman for cheering him on during the finals. He also thanked AMF
Rolling Meadows for a fair shot and the ABT for a well-run tournament. Jeff said
his winnings would be used to buy something nice for his wife.
CONGRATULATIONS jeff!
Tournament Notes: Jan Flynn and Enrique Chavez were this
week's winners in the Storm Ball and Bag raffle.
BtD: In the Beat the Director match, ABT Director Ed
Mousseau defeated Bill A. Brown 201-166. Bill received the $25.00 Consolation
Award. Judi Woods won the $25.00 Spectator Bonus Award. The carryover now stands
at $1,210.
