Front row, left to right: Dawn Vilmin, Michael Allen (tie - 3rd)
John Zola won his first ABT Classic title by defeating Jon Pelletier 255-169 at Espo's Country Lanes. Zola qualified third for the top eight finals and advanced by defeating Ramon Sykes 235-218 and Dawn Vilmin 234-219. Pelletier qualified fourth and advanced with victories over Paul Stabler 238-175 and Michael Allen 245-180. The championship match was decided early as Zola strung a four-bagger in frames two through five to open up a commanding lead that Pelletier was never able to cut into.
Champion's Profile: John Zola is 41 years old an employed as a pipe fitter. He has been back in bowling for about a year after a lengthy lay off. John currently bowls league at Joliet Town & Country Lanes and has a high game of 268 and a 696 high series to his credit. He was rolling a Track Heat II drilled by Brian Hirner at T&D Bowling Supply inside Town & Country Lanes. John said that Brian Hirner has been helping his game by teaching him hand positioning and the basics of his approach, while Ken Paxson has been teaching him to adjust to changing lane conditions. John thanked them both for their help, along with Chris Regas for all the practice bowling. John's winnings will be used for some new golf clubs. On his way to the tournaments each week, John usually tells his brother Bob that this is the one he is going to win. On his way to Espo's this week, it was just the opposite: he told Bob there was no way he could win this week, and here he is: "The new champ!"
BTD: In this week's Beat the Director Match, George Dome defeated ABT Director Ed Mousseau 183-178 to win $1,035. Rich Nolte won the $25 Spectator Bonus Award. The carryover for the next BTD at Stardust Bowl on May 6th stands at $1,009.
Tournament Notes: This week's winner of a free entry into the Chicagoland Open was Donnie Kaskadden.
