Richard DeWitt went from fifth to first at Stardust Bowl to claim his second ABT Masters title. Rich opened the stepladder finals by defeating John Scaletta 260-210. Next up was Mike Pompa, who fell 178-139. In match three, Rich defeated Tom Sawyer 212-188 to advance to the championship match against top seed Rick Hansen. DeWitt got off to a good start in the title match but rails in the fifth and sixth frames allowed Hansen to stay within striking distance. DeWitt finished up first and left another rail in the tenth, opening the door for Hansen who had a strike up in the ninth. Needing the first strike in the tenth, Hansen drilled the hole, only to leave a stone seven pin, leaving DeWitt as the winner by the final score of 181-173.
Champion's Profile: Rich DeWitt is 48 years old and employed as the Director of Maintenance Auditing at TTX Company. He is married to Julie and they have a 21-year-old son, David. Rich has been back in bowling for about six years after a 20-year layoff and currently bowls leagues at Guttormsen Rec and Sheridan Lanes in Kenosha. His high game is 300 and he has a high series of 799. Rich was using a Brunswick Danger Zone drilled by Jim Alfordsen at Sheridan Pro Shop. Rich thanked his wife and son for all their support and the staffs of Stardust Bowl and the ABT for a well-run event. Rich said his winnings would be used for more tournaments.
Beat the Director: In the Beat the Director Match, ABT Director Ed Mousseau defeated Jan Flynn 226-180. Jan received the $25 Consolation prize. Karl Grosse won the $25 Spectator Bonus Award. The carryover for the next BTD now stands at $512.00.
