Tom Sawyer won his third ABT Masters title by defeating top seed John Sypniewski 221-181 at Stardust Bowl. Tom qualified 4th for the stepladder finals, and started his climb with a 211-172 victory over Carmelo Rosa. He then eliminated Jim Prescott 268-185 and Anthony Weidenfeller 194-163 to advance to the title match. John Sypniewski took the early lead in the championship match, but a "big four" in the fifth frame allowed Tom to pull even. A turkey in frames 7-9 gave Tom a commanding lead that John could not overcome, and Tom went on to win by the final score of 222-181.
Champion's Profile: Tom Sawyer is 29 years old and single. He is employed as a store manager for Menards. Tom has been bowling for 20 years and bowls leagues at Arena and Oak Lawn. His high game is 300 and he has a high series of 790 to his credit. Tom was using an AMF Nighthawk drilled by Jimmy Williams at Reaction Pro Shop. Tom credits Jimmy Williams as having helped him to improve his game. Tom thanked the ABT and Stardust Bowl for holding a great tournament on a challenging condition. He also thanked his sister, Sue, for being there to watch him bowl, and his girlfriend, Katie, for her continued support of his bowling habits. Tom said his winnings would be used to pay off some bills.
