Assistant Manager; Mike Martenson, 1st; Ken Knaak, 2nd *** martenson wins third title ***Mike Martenson won his third ABT Masters title by defeating Ken Knaak 244-212 at Brunswick Zone Lakehurst. Pat Hanley opened the stepladder finals by defeating Gary Knockel 259-200. Ken Knaak then eliminated Hanley 201-200 and Neal Mestling 235-224 to earn his berth in the championship match against top seed Mike Martenson. The title match was close early on, with Martenson clinging to a nine-pin lead after six frames. Both bowlers struck in the seventh, eighth, and ninth frames, setting up the crucial tenth. It was here that Lady Luck stepped in, allowing Martenson to carry while Knaak couldn't, giving Martenson the 244-212 victory. Champion's Profile: Mike Martenson is 40 years old and employed as a Senior Engineer for Nortel Networks. He has a 17-year-old son, Michael, from a previous marriage. Mike has been bowling for 34 years and currently bowls leagues at Espo's Country Lanes and Elk Grove Bowl. His high game is 288 and his high series is 747, which he rolled in Sunday's semifinals. Mike was using a Columbia Ricochet drilled by Joe Bacagaluppi at Back to Basics Pro Shop, of which Mike is part owner. He credits Tom Carter, Rich Nolte, and Rob Taylor as having helped him with his game. He especially credits a recent lesson with Tom Carter at T-Byrd Lanes in Rochelle as helping him to really change his game. Mike thanked Jennifer Meyer, Rich and Jeanne Nolte, and the ABT staff for all their support. He also thanked his parents for getting him started in bowling, Tom Carter for his coaching, and Joe Bacagaluppi for his drilling. Mike said his winnings would be used for bills. He also said he hoped Ed would be gentle with his average and handicap. Sure, Mike, gentle like a rock!
