John Pitner won his first ABT Masters title
with a 235-228 victory over David Backstrom at Lakewood Bowl.
In match one of the top eight finals, Bill
Brown 259 defeated Rick Slusin 236 and Ed Harmon 220. In match two, David
Backstrom 252 defeated Bill Brown 196 and Tony Arrate 192. In match three,
Backstrom 253 defeated Mike Martenson, Sr. 232 and Tom Sawyer 173 to
advance to the championship match against top seed John Pitner. The title
match was close throughout, with Pitner holding a slim six-pin lead after
six frames. Backstrom's undoing came in frame seven where he left a "Big
Four", allowing Pitner to stretch his lead to 18. Pitner put the match
away with a double in the ninth and tenth frames. Backstrom closed with a
four-bagger but it was too late as Pitner won by the final score of
235-228.
