After seven long years of trying, Tom
Variola finally won his first ABT Masters title with a 238-198 victory
over Chris Sheehan at Hawthorn Lanes.
In the opening match of the top eight
finals, John Sypniewski 269 defeated Rick Riddle 171 and Harvey Lee 164.
In match two, Chris Sheehan 227 defeated John Sypniewski 201 and Jeff
Colaianni 188. In match three, Chris Sheehan 245 defeated Terry Rouse 241
and John Miller 208 to advance to the title match against top seed Tom
Variola. The championship match was decided quickly as Variola struck in
five of the first six frames to build a commanding lead that Sheehan was
unable to overcome.
Champion's Profile: Tom Variola is 43
years old and employed as the Vice President of a north shore company. He
has been back in bowling for seven years and currently bowls league at
Lombard Lanes. His high game is 300 and he has a high series of 789. Tom
was using a Lane 1 Bomb drilled by Leon Burghoff at Lombard Lanes. Tom
credits Leon Burhoff and Ernie Manno as having helped his game. He thanked
them along with John Sypniewski for their help and support. Tom said his
winning would be used for the Vegas Nationals. Tom also said that now that
he has done it once he can't wait to do it again.
