Gerry Ashby won his first ABT Masters title by defeating John Sypniewski 175-167 at Espo's Entertainment Center. Gerry was top seeded for the top 12 finals, earning him byes in the first two rounds of match play. In round three, he defeated Tony Grochowalski 210-207 to advance to the title match. John Sypniewski qualified third and advanced by defeating Jim Fishman 248-202, Jerome Woodfork 214-213, and Curt Aemisegger 202-174. Both bowlers struggled on the championship pair and after eight frames, Sypniewski clung to a slim two-pin lead. John then left a washout in frame nine and a 6-7 rail in frame ten, allowing Gerry to pull out the narrow 175-167 victory. Champion's Profile: Gerry Ashby is 62 years old and retired. He is married to Rosie and they have two children, Tammy and Tina, and three grandchildren. Gerry has been bowling for 15 years and bowls league at Espo's. His high game is 289 and he has a high series of 740. Gerry was using an Ebonite Matrix drilled by Joe Bacagaluppi at Back to Basics Pro Shop. Gerry credits Lou Esposito for some coaching and Joe Bacagaluppi for some ball choices that have helped him to improve his game. Gerry thanked Mike and Joe at Back to Basics, the ABT staff, and the new owners and staff at Espo's for a job well done in hosting their first event. Gerry's winnings will be used for new bowling and fishing equipment.
