Gary Burian won his second ABT Masters title
by defeating Matt Barker 272-256 at Arlington Lanes.
In match one of the stepladder finals, Mike
Meifert defeated Rebecca Hoffman 204-173. In match two Sheldon Mathis
defeated Mike Meifert 246-221. In match three Gary Burian defeated Sheldon
Mathis 283-178. In the title match Burian turkeyed in frames 1-3 to take a
14-pin lead over top seed Matt Barker. Barker doubled in frames four and
five to cut the lead down to pins. The turning point in the match came in
frame six when Barker threw his only errant shot of the match, leaving a
bucket that he converted. Barker struck out from there but it wasn't
enough as Burian strung a six-bagger in frames 5-10 to win by the final
score of 272-256.
Champion's
Profile: Gary Burian is 49 years old and employed as a truck driver
for Badger Murphy. He is married to Linda and they have two daughters,
Diana and Jennifer, ages 19 and 21. Gary has been bowling since youth and
currently bowls leagues at Rolling Lanes. His high game is 300 and he has
a high series of 815 to his credit. Gary credits Boots Kass as having
helped him with his game. He thanked the ABT and Arlington Lanes for
having the tournament. Gary said his winnings would be used for a Florida
vacation.
