Shorty Torres won his first ABT title by
defeating Herbert Kirchgaessner 247-195 at Lakeside Lanes.
In match one of the stepladder finals
Dolores Finley defeated Michael Love 225-214. In match two Finley downed
Pete Tagalos 173-169. In match three Herbert Kirchgaessner defeated
Dolores Finley 209-178 to advance to the championship match against Shorty
Torres. In the title match Shorty started with a double to jump right out
to a 42-pin lead. Herbert came right back with a double in frames 3 and 4
to cut the lead down to 7 pins. Shorty took control from there with a
4-bagger in frames 5-8 and Herbert was unable to keep pace as Shorty
cruised to the 247-195 final score.
Champion’s Profile: Shorty Torres is
38 years old and employed as an automation technician. He is married to
Gwen and has 3 children, Nathan, Sammy, and Sydney. Shorty has been
bowling for 11 years and bowls league at Brunswick Zone Fountain Square
(Lakehurst). He has a high game of 289 and a 721 high series to his
credit. Shorty was rolling an Ebonite Matrix drilled by Jim Erickson at
Sunset Bowl. He thanked the ABT staff, Lakeside Lanes, and his pal Jason
Luna. Shorty said his winnings would be used for bills and Christmas. He
also said he was glad to finally win especially since he wasn’t really
planning on bowling this weekend.
