***  Mathis Wins YEA Event ***

Sheldon Mathis won his first ABT title by defeating Mike Meifert 234-178 in our Year-End Appreciation Tournament at Lombard Lanes. Sheldon qualified 5th for the top 12 finals and advanced by defeating Patty Gleason 276-227, Rudy Seidl 187-170, and David Watkins 189-183. Mike Meifert qualified 11th and he advanced by defeating Lynn Koenen 238-202, Rick Slusin 215-198, and Rick Hansen 193-173. Sheldon had a 19-pin handicap advantage to start the title match but Mike doubled in the first 2 frames to cut the advantage down to 9 pins. That was as close as he would get, however, as splits in the 5th and 8th frames for Mike allowed Sheldon to pull away to the final 234-178 victory.

Champion’s Profile: Sheldon Mathis is 63 years old and retired. He is married to Candy and has 2 sons, Tony and Terry, ages 9 and 7. Sheldon has been bowling for 45 years and currently bowls league at Parkside Lanes. He has a 299 high game and a 769 high series to his credit. Sheldon was using a Brunswick Ultra Inferno drilled by Rich Moores. Sheldon is a self-taught bowler and credits practice as having helped him to develop his game. He thanked his wife Candy for her support, Rich Moores for drilling his equipment, and the ABT staff and Lombard Lanes for having the tournament. Sheldon said his winnings would go towards a vacation and a new house.

congratulations Sheldon!

Tournament Notes: Congratulations to Mike Meifert on his graduation from the ABT. Mike has been a class act on and off the lanes and we wish him the best in his future bowling endeavors. I am sure we will be hearing more from Mike in the future. Good luck Mike!

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard on the fabulous food spread that was out all weekend long. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
